“Yesterday Trump signed the Orwellian named “Strengthening & Unleashing America’s Law Enforcement To Pursue Criminals & Protect Innocent Citizens” executive order, which:
-Expands military surplus to local law enforcement
-Increases federal resources for officer training, higher pay, stronger legal protections, and harsher penalties for crimes against officers
-Establishes a system for providing legal support, financial resources and indemnification for officers facing unjust legal challenges
-Directs a review of federal agreements that could hinder law enforcement operations
-Targets sanctuary cities, with legal action against local officials obstructing federal immigration enforcement.
This order effectively strengthens police immunity, funds legal defense for officers, provides more military-grade equipment (as if the 1033 program wasn’t enough already) and intensifies punishments for crimes against officers (because 7 years in prison for assaulting a police K9 isn’t stiff enough.)
This is all VERY concerning, Trump is creating a super class of officers, but we won’t hear a word in objection from the “law and order” right, who is cheering it on. As Billy Jack said, “When police break the law, there isn’t any law… just a fight for survival.” – Jason Bassler
